Using Self-Storage To Organize Donations

by Alexander Gonzales

Whether you run a church or a nonprofit charity, you may find that you don't always have enough room to store your organization's donations. A self-storage unit can be a great option for your charity, but you'll want to make sure the space is organized and used to its maximum potential. Here are some ways to use a self storage space for your organization's donations.

Create A Bagging And Boxing Station

If you prepare boxes for a food pantry or bags of clothing for families, consider using part of the storage unit as a bagging and boxing station. Line up a few long tables, and put the bags or boxes at one end. Arrange groups of items to be placed in each package along the lengths of the tables, and then form an assembly line with your volunteers. They can place the items in front of them in each box or bag, passing each package on to the next person until each bag or box is full. At the end, have one person seal the packages and label them for distribution to those in need.

Build A Donation Wardrobe

As you receive donations of clothing, bring them to the self-storage unit and arrange them into a large-scale wardrobe area. Use rolling racks lined up against the walls of the unit to sort and hang clothing. Each rolling rack should feature a different type of clothing. For example, winter coats would go on one rack, while shorts and skirts might go on another. Group items according to size, and then zip bundles of clothing on each rack into garment bags for protection against dirt and dust.  You can then grab the bundles of each type of clothing as you need them for distribution.

Start A Food Pantry

To create a food pantry, you'll want to rent a climate-controlled storage unit to help preserve freshness. You should store only nonperishable items in the unit, and place all items in plastic storage containers to protect them against insects or other pests. Group the items by type, and label each container clearly. You can then stack the containers on freestanding shelving units to keep the items organized. Be sure to rotate your donation supplies so the oldest items go out first. This can help to prevent foods from expiring before they can be given to those who need them.

There are many ways that churches and nonprofits can use self-storage units for donations. Draw inspiration from these ideas, and use the ones that make the most sense for your organization.
