3 Things That Are Necessary Before Using A Self Storage Unit

by Alexander Gonzales

Are you planning on moving to a new home that's slightly smaller than your current one? Are you already looking for a place to store your excess belongings? Whether your move is temporary or you intend for it to be permanent, there may be things that you don't want to throw out or give away but that won't fit in your new home. Finding a good storage location is going to be the first step to being able to keep your cherished belongings. But knowing how to properly store your items is crucial to ensuring that they remain in good condition. Here are some things that you need to consider:

Climate-controlled or not climate-controlled: Whether or not you want to pay extra to have your self-storage unit be climate controlled is going to depend on exactly what you're storing and how long you're storing it for. Some things, like books or clothes, can be fine without climate control for a few weeks or even a few months. However, things like heat, humidity, and cold can eventually cause damage to most items that are being stored in a unit without climate control. If you're unsure how long you'll need to keep your belongings in storage, it's best to try to find a climate-controlled unit, just in case.

Storage containers: If you're going to be storing clothes, don't keep them in sealed plastic garment bags. The plastic bags will collect humidity and allow mold and mildew to grow. Cardboard boxes are a better option for most items. However, if you're concerned about potential pests, plastic tubs will keep out most pests will still allowing a certain amount of air movement. Although a good self-storage facility has regular visits from a pest control company, you may want to sprinkle moth balls in your containers as a precaution against insects.

Label everything: Simply moving from one house to another can be bad enough; things get lost, and you can never find the box that you want to unpack. This is doubly true when you move into a self-storage unit. Label every side of every box or plastic tub, including the tops and bottoms. If you need to go into your unit to retrieve stuff, you'll want the labels to be easy to find and to read. Once you find what you need, you could then accidentally wind up turning a box or a tub so that the label isn't visible. If you label every side, this won't be a problem.
