If you're going to be putting your car into long-term storage, there are some steps you should take to prevent damage. Storing your car, especially long-term, requires quite a bit of advanced planning. Things like moisture and dirt can really wreak havoc on your car, but so can other things. Here are three steps you'll need to take to protect your car while it's in long-term storage.
Start From the Ground Up
If your car is going to be stored for a long period of time, you'll need to start prepping from the ground up. What your car is parked on makes a lot of difference when it comes to long-term storage. If your car is going to be parked on a concrete surface, you'll need to ensure that there's a vapor barrier between the car and the concrete. You can do that by placing a tarp on the ground where your car will be parked. If your car is going to be stored on bare soil, you'll need to ensure that the tires don't come in contact with that soil during storage. The best way to do that is to create parking strips out of wood. Cut strips of plywood and place the strips on the ground. Park your car directly on the strips.
Fill the Tank
You might not be driving your car while it's in storage, but it should still have a full tank of gas. Filling your car's gas tank up before you put it in storage will help prevent moisture build-up. It's also a good idea to include a bottle of gas treatment with the fill-up. That will ensure that the gas doesn't degrade while it's in storage.
Wash the Car
Once you have the parking area prepared for your car, you'll need to give it a thorough washing. Pay close attention to the wheel wells and other areas that you might not ordinarily spend much time on. It's also important that you apply a coat of protectant to your tires, and that you empty your glove box of anything that could be damaged during storage.
Protect Against Rodent Invasion
If your car is going to be stored in an area that experiences rodent activity, you'll need to take some steps to secure your car. The last thing you want is to find rodent damage when you get back into your car. Once your car is ready for storage, seal off your car from rodent activity by placing clean rags in the exhaust pipe and intake manifold. You'll also want to place clean rags along the lower edge of your windshield to cover the vents. Taking these measures will help keep rodents out of your car.
